A film with no video file
This chapter’s film is a small JavaScript program, like the chapters before it. The night-time memory by the pigsty is dimmed and vignetted like a half-remembered dream, and Father’s letter writes itself line by line on the canvas. The sound effects are synthesised in the browser. The two recorded tracks are the narration, in his own cloned voice for Vietnamese, and the score.

Illustrations are an artistic re-imagining, not historical photographs. Names, dates and events come only from his memoir. Ba is drawn from his 1951 wedding photo and his later portrait, aged to 52; chú Bảy from his photo; cậu Tẩn is imagined from the text. The letter is drawn by the code; its words are not his father’s.
