A film with no video file
This chapter’s film is a small JavaScript program, like the chapters before it. The tracer fire, the truck’s single light, the fuel-drum blast and the fever haze are drawn live on the canvas; the aircraft is an F-4 Phantom, the type flying over the trail in 1968. The sound effects are synthesised in the browser. The two recorded tracks are the narration, in his own cloned voice for Vietnamese, and the score.

Illustrations are an artistic re-imagining, not historical photographs. Names, dates and events come only from his memoir. The boy is drawn from the narrator’s courier sheets; cậu Tẩn, the couriers, the drivers and the villagers are imagined from the text. The anti-aircraft tracers, flares and fire are drawn by the code.
