A film with no video file
This chapter’s film is a small JavaScript program, like the chapters before it. The real handwritten Youth Union decision of January 1969 is taped into the film, and the monthly rations appear as paper labels rather than a generated picture, so every number is exact. The sound effects are synthesised in the browser. The two recorded tracks are the narration, in his own cloned voice for Vietnamese, and the score.

Illustrations are an artistic re-imagining, not historical photographs. Names, dates and events come only from his memoir. The Youth Union decision and the photo of four young men are real, from the family’s papers. Ba is drawn from his photos; Má Loan, the teachers and the villagers are imagined from the text. At Ba Đình Hall the film shows only the stage and its light.
