A film with no video file
This chapter’s film is a small JavaScript program, like the chapters before it. Mother’s only letter, fifty-one words written on 27 August 1975, is taped into the film as the real object. The sound effects are synthesised in the browser. The two recorded tracks are the narration, in his own cloned voice for Vietnamese, and the score.

Illustrations are an artistic re-imagining, not historical photographs. Names, dates and events come only from his memoir. Mother’s letter and the photo of chú Bảy, thím Mười and thím Chiến are real. Ba and Mẹ are drawn from their 1951 wedding photo, aged; the young man from his 1972 student card; bác Tín from his photo; chị Văn is imagined from the text.
