A film with no video file
This chapter’s film is a small JavaScript program, like the chapters before it. The Russian alphabet and the grammar on the blackboard are chalked on the canvas by code, so every letter is right, and the real photo of the prep class is taped into the film. The sound effects are synthesised in the browser. The two recorded tracks are the narration, in his own cloned voice for Vietnamese, and the score.

Illustrations are an artistic re-imagining, not historical photographs. Names, dates and events come only from his memoir. The class photo is real; the young man is drawn from his 1972 student-card photo, and his teacher from the woman at the centre of that class photo. The chalk writing is typeset by the code.
